Can the Council Lawyers assist me with a private case at Court or certify my documents?
No. Council Lawyers only represent the Council at any Court of law. You may engage a private Lawyer to assist you with your private matter. Also Council lawyers only certify Council Documents.
Do Council Lawyers handle criminal cases?
No. they only handle civil cases for and/or against Council.
Do Bye-Law Officers arrest and confiscate goods like other law enforcement officers?
Yes, Byelaw Officers are empowered by the Local Government Act to arrest and confiscate goods in contravention of bye-laws or delegated legislation.
I want to host a party this weekend and we will be playing loud music. Do I need to seek permission for the event?
Yes. You are supposed to ask for a permit at the bye-law office since sound is a nuisance to neighbours and it will have to be monitored by the Bye Law Officers/other law enforcement officers.
I recently lost my job. can I set up a table in town and sell commodities to make ends meet?
Yes, provided you obtain a Street-vending Certificate with the Commercial Department.
I recently misplaced my Trade Licence. can I continue trading without it?
Trading without a license displayed in the Business Premises is prohibited and attracts a charge of P500.You must apply for a duplicate license at Commercial Affairs Office in case you have lost or misplaced your trade license.
My business wants to advertise a clearance sale. can we use a loud speaker for customers to hear us from far?
You will have to obtain a noise and nuisance permit at Bye Law Office to advertise your clearance sale.
I have seen livestock roaming the streets of town at night. to which Department do I report at the Council?
At the Bye law Division which works in conjunction with pounds’ office to ensure that no livestock is kept within the City.
